Some wonder what the difference is between a bulging disc and degenerative disc disease. This article will discuss the differences, as well as what you can do for relief from both conditions.
The discs of the spine are cushions that separate each set of bones within the spine. They act as shock absorbers when you move, preventing the bones from touching (which would be very painful).
Each disc is made up of a strong outer covering called the Annulus and a soft jelly center called the Nucleus.
In the case of a bulging disc, the outer covering becomes damaged and the jelly in the center of the disc begins to shift where the disc is weakest. This results in the outer wall of the disc “bulging” out, which is where the condition gets its name.
The biggest difference between these conditions is the cause. A bulging disc is usually caused by an injury of some sort, whether it be a car accident, a slip and fall, or even a sports injury.
Degenerative Disc Disease, on the other hand, is a progressive condition (it gets worse over time) that is usually the end result of overuse of the back over a long period of time.
What happens with Degenerative Disc Disease is that the jelly within the disc begins to dehydrate (lose water), and the disc will become shorter.
This results in the bones above and below developing bone spurs, which will eventually join and fuse the bones together. This happens to stabilize the weakened disc, but it isn’t good because you lose the ability to move in the affected joints.
Most doctors will recommend the same treatments for both of these conditions: medications, physical therapy, pain injections and surgery in the worst cases.
Unfortunately, these treatments are not always the most effective. Typically it requires a combination of treatments for the best results.
