Back pain and leg are a common occurrence. Over 80% of the population suffers from back pain at least once during their lives. The problem is that once it has happened once, it usually returns. Over time, episodes of pain tend to be more painful with pain that extends to the leg. The progression of pain may lead to sciatica that is caused by a herniated disk presses on a nerve going to the leg. This is often very painful and often causes tingling, numbness or weakness of certain muscle groups in the leg.

The McKenzie method therapy, developed by New Zealand Physiotherapist Robin McKenzie in the 1950s is a system of treatment or management that does just that. Therapists with specialized training in the McKenzie Method with two levels of training possible.

1. Accredited or basic level

2. Or Advanced Diploma level

Any musculoskeletal pain can be evaluated and treated by a therapist McKenzie, however, as McKenzie originally developed the method when it was treating a patient with back pain, this method is known worldwide for "the treatment of back pain."

Patients undergoing a McKenzie mechanical assessment. They are classified according to how they respond to different movements and positions and given specific exercises according to their classification. It is a generic approach, but exercise exercises are tailored according to each individual.

If a patient has a "mechanical problem" – ie, related to bones, joints, muscles, or discs, the therapist is able to determine McKenzie within 2-3 sessions. This means testing or research is needed to determine the source of the problem.

The good news is that most (> 80%) have a mechanical problem and not responding to this active approach that empowers the patient to take control of their problem.
